Current Position

Professor of Practice, Statewide Nutrition Coordinator, Oregon State University Extension Service

What is the focus of your current work and/or subject of your current research?

Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption amongst limited income Oregon moms and their families through a social marketing campaign, Food Hero. Focusing on change at the individual and family level but also in policies, systems and environments.

How has your GRID minor helped you in your career?

GRID helped me gain invaluable exposure to the analysis of research which I currently use every day. Plus, more than anything I always consider human development and gender equity when talking to women and their children about their family food planning, shopping and eating habits and working on programs to promote healthy diets. And when working on a statewide program we always have to hold and consider the voice of immigrants and those with diverse international backgrounds, and aim to have materials that apply to everyone. GRID helped build my lens for that important work.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for current GRID Students?

If at all possible travel and talk to others. Outside of the country is great, but even interact with diverse audiences within the Champaign-Urbana community and throughout the United States. It is amazing how pairing that with what your GRID experiences will bring so much to life, giving you “voices” to refer back to.
