Flora Kessy, was the first Rita and Arnold Goodman Fellow. Ms. Kessy was a Doctoral Student in the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A native of Tanzania, Ms. Kessy received a Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition from Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania in 1991 and a Master’s degree in Natural Resource Management and Sustainable Agriculture from the Agricultural University of Norway in 1996. She holds a teaching position in the Development Studies Institute at Sokoine University of Agriculture. Ms. Kessy’ s Doctoral focus is on Family and Consumer Economics, with a concentration on Gender Relations in International Development. Her research interests include issues related to gender and food security and women’s reproductive health. Because dissertation research on ways of improving contraceptive delivery systems in Tanzania in order to lower the current fertility rate of 5.8 children per woman. Upon completion of her Ph.D., she returned to Tanzania to continue teaching, research and extension work designed to enhance the health and well-being of families in her country.
